Have you winterized your home?

Updated: Dec 3, 2019

When it comes to taking care of your new home, we have a few home maintenance tips. These jobs should take priority in your home to ensure that your home is comfortable, safe and trouble free.

1. Check the Attic

When checking your attic, make sure that it is a cold zone, meaning that it should be the same temperature as the outside air. If there is heat loss, homeowners may notice "ice damming", meaning that the roof snow melts then re-freezes causing damning. Its important to make sure to check for heat loss to prepare you for the winter months.

2. Check for condensation and excess humidity

High humidity in the winter can lead to high costs. Condensation can occur from too much moisture in the home, or not enough ventilation. Newer windows that are double or triple-glazed can help block outside temperatures. During the winter, a heat recovery ventilator (HRV) helps to bring fresh air through the home.

3. Check Range hood filter

The point of a range hood filter is to collect grease. Cleaning the range hood filter can get rid of lingering food odors collected - especially in the winter. When cleaning the range hood filter, be sure to wait until it is completely dry before re-installing.

4. Check Furnace Filter

Taking care of your furnace will prolong the life of your furnace saving you both time and money. A clean filter helps you keep your home clean and reduce allergens in the home. If the filter is clogged, homeowners may notice cold spots in the home. It's important to keep a clean filter on hand and change the filter monthly.
